Aliyev's Government Funds the "Western Azerbaijan" Project: Where is the Government's Response?
January 20, 2026

In this episode of the "Perspective" program, the guest is Edmon Marukyan, Chairman of the "Bright Armenia" Party. During the conversation, the signed document regarding the "TRIP" road passing through Syunik, its content, and political consequences are discussed. Edmon Marukyan presents his assessment of the August 8 document, noting that it effectively provides Azerbaijan with unimpeded passage through Armenian territory without adequate compensation. In other words, it is another means of appeasing the international community to extend power for another 5 years.

The interview touches upon the substantive meaning of the term "Zangezur Corridor," the application of Armenia's sovereignty, "front office" and "back office" mechanisms, as well as the contradictions between the authorities' statements and the actual documents. It was noted that Aliyev received what he wanted: a privileged, unimpeded road.

The threatening statement by Vladimir Solovyov regarding Armenia - suggesting that a special military operation should be started in Armenia as well, following the example of Ukraine - was also discussed. Armenia-Russia relations were analyzed, along with the opposition's response to Solovyov.

The funding of the "Western Azerbaijan" project by Aliyev's government was also discussed. The conversation covered the opposition's proposals and criticisms. An example was given regarding the astronomical increase in property taxes. Parliament passed that law in 2019 when "Bright Armenia" was in parliament as the opposition. Even then, the opposition was fighting against it, but no one listened.

At the end of the conversation, the unification of opposition forces is discussed, along with the public demand for participating in elections as a united pole and its possible consequences for Armenia's political life.
