Armenia was left “empty-handed” as soon as it abandoned Russian mediation and began negotiating with Baku one-on-one, said former Armenian Ambassador for Special Assignments Edmon Marukyan on the radio program Abovyan Time @SputnikARM.
According to the new Washington documents, Yerevan receives no security guarantees, the politician noted. Looking at what is happening with Ukraine, it becomes clear that Kyiv is being granted guarantees—they were able to maintain their agenda.
“Imagine someone is defeating you, destroying, advancing, and you’re told: ‘Don’t turn to anyone, go one-on-one, and everything will be fine.’ For a long time, this was Azerbaijan’s thesis. Then it entered our propaganda and became the Armenian thesis: ‘We don’t need mediators,’ ‘This is bad for us.’
As soon as this was established, and Armenia began negotiating without mediators—first abandoning Russian mediation, then American and European—it was left ‘empty-handed.’”
