The Nuclear Power Plant is being closed: What dangers face Armenia's energy security and future?
February 05, 2026

The Armenian government has made a decision that could be devastating for our statehood. The Metsamor nuclear power plant is to be replaced by the unknown technology of small modular reactors (SMR). Why is the executive branch abandoning the proven and safe Water-Water Energetic Reactors (VVER) and choosing a path that specialists describe as premature and highly risky?

While Minister Davit Khudatyan speaks of flexibility, the reality is alarming: there is currently no such plant in operation anywhere in the world. Is this purely an engineering choice, or a geopolitical directive aimed at the final severance of nuclear ties with Russia? UN experts claim that Armenia is under Western pressure, and Pashinyan's cabinet is sacrificing our energy sovereignty.

At a time when Turkey is building the powerful Akkuyu nuclear power plant with Russian resources, Armenia stands at risk of closing its own strategic facility and falling into dependency on the enemy. Is this a consistent plan for the destruction of the state, or another dangerous experiment on its own people?
